On Wednesday, May 2, Serena Williams took to Instagram to post a beautiful selfie of her and daughter Alexis Olympia. She captioned the image, “Mama bear and baby cub. She’s all smiles in the sweet photo, holding her daughter in her arms. However, the post has sparked an unlikely debate online, as Serena has become the subject of eyebrow-shaming, with users publicly dissecting them in the comments section.
As Allure reported, commenters have taken to Serena’s post to criticize the tennis champion’s arches, which appear to be makeup-free. “What’s wrong with your eyebrows?” one user wrote. “Girl those eyebrows let me do them for you. They’re irritating,” said another.
However, Serena fans all over the world weren’t having any of the hate, and just as quickly jumped to her defense. “Eyebrows don’t matter – just flex @serenawilliams ,” preached one user. Someone else chimed in with, “All of y’all complaining about her eyebrows – can you even do ¼ of what she does and be fond the entire time – I think not!!!!!”
Sadly, celebrities are often targets of body-shaming online, especially when it comes to hair. Most often, it seems to center around women’s body hair, as Halsey, Scout Willis, and Paris Jackson have all fallen victim to social media outrage at their decision not to shave their underarms. A woman’s grooming choices are entirely her own, and if Serena Williams wants to wear her brows totally natural, it should go without saying that it’s her choice and her choice only.
