Mahomes Responds to Kansas City Chiefs’ Decision on Running Back’s Contract

Patrick Mahomes, the quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, has given his thumbs up to the team’s decision to re-sign running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire. The Chiefs announced on Tuesday that they had sealed a one-year deal with Edwards-Helaire, giving Mahomes another familiar face in the offensive line-up.

Mahomes showed his support by sharing the announcement on his personal X account, clearly pleased with Edwards-Helaire’s return to Kansas City. Interestingly, Edwards-Helaire was signed on the same day that ex-Baltimore Ravens running back JK Dobbins was due to meet with the Chiefs.

Dobbins had a tough start to the 2023 NFL season against the Houston Texans when he tore his Achilles, ending his season before it really got going. He also missed all of the 2021 season after tearing his ACL in the Ravens’ final preseason game against the Washington Commanders.

Looking for a new beginning with a different team, the 25-year-old Dobbins met with the Los Angeles Chargers before the reigning Super Bowl champions. However, with Edwards-Helaire staying in Kansas City, the Chiefs might decide not to sign Dobbins.

Edwards-Helaire has had his fair share of injuries and inconsistent performances, which led the Chiefs to place him behind former seventh-round draft pick Isiah Pacheco. After an impressive rookie season with 803 rushing yards, Edwards-Helaire managed a total of 1,042 rushing yards over the next three seasons.

However, what makes Edwards-Helaire stand out from Dobbins is his familiarity with the team. He’s only ever played for the Chiefs and has spent his entire career alongside Mahomes.

Edwards-Helaire was part of the team when the Chiefs were defeated by Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV. Plus, he was a member of the Kansas City teams that won two consecutive Super Bowl titles, against the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers.

With Edwards-Helaire back on board, the Chiefs can continue building a team they hope will be strong enough to potentially win a third straight championship. On Monday, it was reported that Kansas City signed Carson Wentz as the new backup quarterback for Mahomes.
