Rafael Nadal, 37 years old, once again faced health challenges when he announced on social media on the evening of April 4 his decision to miss the Monte Carlo Masters.
Nadal is not healthy enough to play the tournament he won 11 times
The “King of Clay” tennis player wrote: “This period was very difficult for me as an athlete. My body did not allow me to participate in Monte Carlo. Even though I trained hard every day with the hope of I want to once again participate in an important tournament, the truth is that I cannot compete here this year.”
The decision was not an easy one for the Spaniard, but Nadal admitted that he had no choice but to accept and look forward to the following tournaments in the clay season. Nadal has only participated in 3 matches in the last 14 months and has repeatedly decided to skip the tournament on the opening day.
He is currently the record holder of the Monte Carlo event with 11 championships after 17 participations. Nadal has achieved a win rate of 92% at this tournament. However, the last time this tennis player was crowned at Monte Carlo was in 2018.
Nadal is focusing on physical training in Mallorca to prepare for the clay season, with the lofty goal of winning his 15th championship at Roland Garros. Nadal has not yet decided whether he will participate in the Barcelona Open (April 13-21), the tournament taking place at home, immediately after the Monte Carlo Masters.
Monte Carlo, the first ATP 1000 clay season, will take place from April 7-14. Unable to attend the Monte Carlo tournament, Nadal can look forward to two other clay-court Masters events including Madrid Open (April 24 – May 5), Rome Open (May 8-19) and then Roland Garros (May 8-19). May 26 – June 9) and the Olympics at the end of July.
