Just one day after the 2024 Paris Olympics officially ended, Serbia held a major event to celebrate the success of the medal-winning athletes at the event held in France.
The Serbian sports delegation had a quite successful Olympics, winning 3 gold medals, 1 silver medal and 1 bronze medal, ranking 27th overall.
The athletes who brought home gold medals were Zorana Arunovic and Damir Mikec in shooting, the men’s water polo team and most notably Novak Djokovic in tennis.
The 37-year-old defeated Carlos Alcaraz in the men’s singles final to win his first Olympic gold medal. Djokovic won in dramatic fashion 7-6, 7-6 against the Spaniard to add the gold to his already impressive collection of 24 Grand Slam titles.
This victory is not only Djokovic’s personal achievement, but it is also the pride of all of Serbia.
Tens of thousands of people in the capital Belgrade (Serbia) together created a festive atmosphere at the ceremony to celebrate the athletes returning from the 2024 Olympics.
Before stepping onto the balcony of the parliament building, athletes, coaches and the president of the Serbian Olympic Committee, Bozidar Maljkovic, attended a reception at the presidential palace.
“The entire country of 7 million people feels immense pride and joy as we climb to the heights where nothing seems out of reach… You gave us strength, and thank you for that,” Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic told the medalists in his speech.
