She is one of the most prestigious tennis players in the world, one of the most desired women and one of the strongest icons of elegance on and off the court. Maria Sharapova , 28 years old, is no fashionista or trendsetter, but even so, she manages to be admired by professionals in the world of entertainment and fashion (including Anna Wintour ) as one of the best-dressed women in the world. As? That’s what Vogue US tries to find out.
In an interview with the North American magazine, the Russian tennis player shares her valuable style secrets – and you can see the results below.
“I like mixing colors and prints more and more”, says Sharapova about her fashion choices. “I’m not afraid to be bold with prints!”, jokes the athlete, who brings the same sense of style from the red carpets to the clay – a place where she brightens up the games with her colorful and non-obvious sports looks.
“At the next US Open , I’m going to wear an all-black look,” he says. “I love trying new things with my sportswear, but I’m also very influenced by the culture of each place I play.” When he competed in New York, Sharapova opted for sober tones like black, white and gray, the face of the city’s urban look. “I range between black pieces that are chic and modern, to those that are a little daring,” says the tennis player. I love that activewear now has influences from ready-to-wear and vice versa. I want to feel confident in all the clothes I choose, and on the court I don’t want any type of distraction,” he says.
For appearances at events and red carpets, Maria Sharapova has a sophisticated look when choosing the designers who will dress her – Alexander McQueen, Dolce&Gabbana, Marc Jacobs, Valentino and Jason Wu are among her favorite brands. “I like dresses with clean and simple shapes, but which also have a sophisticated and powerful aesthetic”, he told Vogue US.
When she goes shopping, the tennis player says she likes to invest in key pieces, which can be used in several looks. “I just bought a new pair of white jeans from Current/Eliot and a black jumpsuit from Isabel Marant”, he reveals. In terms of accessories, Sharapova opts for elegant and timeless items: “I love my TAG Heuer Aquaracer watch and Jennifer Meyer jewelry.”
After the end of the Open, Sharapova has maintained a hectic schedule, traveling non-stop to promote her line of sweets, Sugarpova – which even has a pop-up store inside Bloomingdale’s in New York, open until September 14th.
Among her traditional choices for fashionista events, the Russian tennis player prefers neutral tones – white, black, sand and pastel tones. On her feet, Sharapova takes the opportunity to swap her sports sneakers for pointed-toe pumps and sky-high heels, always combined with small structured clutches from brands like Bottega Veneta and Gucci .
Comfortable with the mini length on the courts – her sporty looks require clothes with mobility and comfort for long matches –, Sharapova is not afraid to show off her tennis-lined legs at formal events.
The secret to never falling into vulgarity? Choose dresses with a classic aesthetic, neutral tones and noble fabrics – always combined with an elegant pair of pumps.
When opting for prints on the red carpets, Sharapova gives preference to those with a romantic and ladylike aesthetic, such as floral and petit pois – in these cases, always embellishing dresses with a fluid shape and more well-behaved length. What about?
