So, this is pretty weird.
The New York Jets are activating quarterback Aaron Rodgers to the 53-man roster from injured reserve despite the fact that Rodgers is not playing again this season as both Rodgers and the team announced.
So why is he being added to the 53-man roster? Well, according to head coach Robert Saleh, the move will allow Rodgers to continue his rehab ability to practice with the team. Had the Jets decided not the activate Rodgers, he would remain on injured reserve and not be able to practice.
“We’re still going to keep him on the active,” Saleh said. “It’s all part of his rehab. Just having him on the field is a plus for everybody, for him and his teammates.”

That sounds great and all — but the Jets were forced them to cut FB Nick Bawden to make room for a guy who won’t even play again this season. Not only that, even if he is practicing, he won’t be taking any meaningful snaps as all the 1st team reps will be going to whoever the Jets are starting at quarterback for the remaining three games.
The Jets (5-9) were eliminated from playoff contention last week and will host the Washington Commanders on Sunday. They will likely have to elevate a quarterback from the practice squad for Sunday’s game as Zach Wilson is in the concussion protocol.
We don’t know who will be starting on Sunday for the Jets but what we do know is it won’t be Aaron Rodgers.
