Tennis player Novak Djokovic confirmed that he has achieved everything he wanted, and will only play tennis because he loves the sport.
In an interview after returning to Belgrade from the Paris Olympics, Novak Djokovic hinted at retirement. He admitted that his tennis goals are no longer there after winning the Olympic gold medal. “I still like to compete because I want to compete and train my body,” the 24-time Grand Slam winner told Serbian media on August 12. “This sport has given me a lot in life.”
According to Djokovic, defeating 21-year-old Carlos Alcaraz in the Paris Olympics final helped him satisfy all his ambitions. “I’m 37 years old and I can still do that, I can’t ask for anything more,” Nole added. “My career is complete. I have everything. Of course I don’t just play to win the cup.”
In addition to winning the Olympics, holding the Grand Slam, Masters 1000 and ATP Finals records, Djokovic has spent the most weeks as world number one and has finished more years as ATP number one than anyone else. He has also won head-to-head matches against his two greatest rivals: Rafael Nadal (31-29) and Roger Federer (27-23).
The Serbian has a few smaller goals left, such as claiming a record 25 Grand Slam titles or equaling Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon titles. However, whether Djokovic wins more glory or not will not affect his status and legacy.
“I want to give my best like any other young player,” Djokovic continued. “I have worked hard and sacrificed a lot. This success is not accidental. Maybe it’s time for me to enjoy the glory. I will appear less, only play the most important tournaments.”
Djokovic skipped both Masters 1000 tournaments in North America this month and will go to the US Open without playing a warm-up match. He did that at Wimbledon and still reached the final despite surgery. Nole is the defending US Open champion and is the clear favorite this year, with few players who can beat him on hard courts.
The final Grand Slam of the year starts on August 26 and, barring any changes, Djokovic will be the second seed. He has yet to win an ATP title this season.
