Carillo: “Sharapova’s Career-Changing Mistake Was Beating Serena at the 2004 Wimbledon”

The 64-year-old former player Mary Carillo said during an interview how Sharapova’s biggest mistake was to beat Serena Williams at Wimbledon 2004, in a very amazing match.

Carillo said: “The worst thing Maria Sharapova could have done was to win Wimbledon at age 17 against that woman who was trying to win her third straight. That was Maria’s biggest mistake. At the time she had no pressure, had great poise and was going for her shots.

I don’t think Serena has still gotten over it.” Sharapova beat Williams for the second and last time of her career just that season at the year-end championships. Maria and Serena have met 22 times over the course of their careers, with Serena who won 20 clashes.

Maria Sharapova has been one of the most iconic women tennis players in modern tennis, and not just because of her many victories on the court, buty also for her beauty, her grit, the fashion and love stories. In her career she has won five Grand Slam tournaments (1 Australian Open, 2 Roland Garros, 1 Wimbledon and 1 US Open) and became one of the ten players in history to have completed the Career Grand Slam, reached on 9 June 2012 with the victory of his first Roland Garros.

On top of that she boasts 36 singles tournaments, including the WTA Finals in 2004, and twelve Premier category tournaments. She has occupied the first position of the world ranking in singles on five different occasions, for a total of 21 weeks, becoming the first Russian player in history and the top of the ranking.

She became number one for the first time at age 18 on August 22, 2005 and for the last time in July 2012. She has been awarded the ESPY Award for best tennis player five times (2005, 2007, 2008, 2012 and 2014) . In 2012 she was awarded the silver medal in singles at the London Olympics, in her only Olympics ever played.
