The NFL is looking into controversial comments made by the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback following the team’s narrow defeat to the Buffalo Bills at Arrowhead Stadium
Patrick Mahomes is facing an investigation by the NFL following comments made towards the officials in the team’s 20-17 defeat to the Buffalo Bills.
The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback is being investigated after his furious reaction to an offside call that ruled out Kadarius Toney’s potential game-winning touchdown. The play in question saw Mahomes fire a pass toward Chiefs star Travis Kelce in the final quarter of the game with the Chiefs down 20-17.
The tight end caught the ball before darting past two Bills players. In a surprising twist, Kelce then threw a perfect lateral to Toney who made a 49-yard run into the end zone. The throw would have been enough to see the Chiefs win the tie, however, it was ruled that Toney was offside.
In response to the call, Mahomes slammed his helmet to the ground before venting his frustrations at the referee. His actions have since resulted in an investigation being launched by the NFL, according to NFL.com insider Ian Rapoport.
Posting on X, he explained: “While Patrick Mahomes’ post-game comments will be reviewed, his on-field yelling aimed at the refs before the game ended and then on-field comments while cameras were rolling and present may be more of an issue.”
Mahomes will have little chance of being able to argue against the claims with his comments having been picked up by the cameras inside the Arrowhead Stadium.
“We played our fing a**es off and you call offensive offsides!” Mahomes could be heard shouting, before adding: “Wildest fing call I’ve ever seen.”
Elaborating on his feelings, the two-time Super Bowl winner claimed that the referee’s call not only greatly impacted the result, but also tainted Kelce’s legacy.
“It’s tough to swallow,” he said. “Not only from me, and football in general, to take away greatness like that, for a guy like Travis to make a play like that, you want to see the guys on the field decide the game.
“They’re human. They make mistakes. But every week, we’re talking about something… It’s the call. Just in that moment. Not for myself. To have a flag change the outcome of the game. I’ve never had offensive offsides called. If it does, they warn you. There wasn’t a warning the entire game.
“And then you make a call like that in the final minute? Another game, we’re talking about the refs. It’s not what we want for the NFL. It’s not what we want for football.”
“That’s a Hall of Fame tight end making a Hall of Fame play, and that won’t be shown on his resume because of an offensive offsides that does not affect the play,” he continued. “It takes away from not only this game, this season but from a Legendary career that Travis [Kelce] has had.”
The result means the Chiefs have suffered three defeats in their last four games. The team will hope to get back to winning ways when they play the New England Patriots in Week 15 (Dec. 17) at Gillette Stadium.
