At the Sabi Sands private game reserve in South Africa, visitors witnessed a stunning and rare encounter between a lion and a leopard. While they were watching a leopard resting on top of a mound, a lion crept up, determined to attack the sleeping feline.
Matthew Poole, a park guide, captured the moment on camera and described the scene as the rarest sighting of his career. Poole was out on a leopard-hunting walk when he spotted one walking along the banks of the Sand River, marking its territory. Shortly after, they noticed a male lion resting on the opposite bank of the river.
Poole told his guests about the possibility of a meeting between the two dominant males, which quickly became a reality. While the leopard was sleeping, the lion began to stalk him from the other side of the river. Suddenly, the lion leaped towards the leopard, who woke up in shock and quickly fought back before escaping.
The lion did not manage to kill the leopard, but it scared it greatly. Poole described how the lion pushed the leopard into a tree on the riverbank before retreating from the area. The scene was full of emotion and nervousness, and although encounters between these two big cats are not common, they do have precedents in nature.
