– When did you first have the idea of writing this book?

But then I felt that no one believed me when I started telling my story of victory. Who would believe your mother was pregnant with you when the Chernobyl disaster happened only 30km from home? You were noticed by Martina Navratilova when you were 6 years old? Or a father trying every way to convince the US immigration authorities to let them grant a visa for his 6 and a half year old daughter to go there with the excuse of becoming a professional tennis player?

I told many reporters about those stories but no one believed them. They think it’s a crazy fairy tale. So I decided to write my life story myself.

-During the process of writing the book, what discovery surprised you the most?

First, I was deeply impressed and moved by the very difficult decision and enormous obstacles that my father, Yuri, faced. I asked him for a long time to write it down because I was a child when my father and I came to America. At that time, I could not imagine the hardships in my father’s mind when he had to leave his homeland and my mother (she had not been granted a visa for many years) to go to a foreign land.

We landed in Florida at midnight with not even knowing a single word of English. My father only brought with him 700 USD and almost lost it all after that. My dad and I went to many, many tennis centers in Florida before finding one we could trust.

There were countless difficulties, but my father always kept his faith. He took on jobs I had never seen before, doing everything he could to help get my career started.

I don’t think I could be so comfortable writing this book with honesty and the trauma and turmoil I have experienced. I also contacted many of my previous coaches for the book, which made me very excited. On the field you are alone, but in reality you are always part of the team.

-Be honest, what’s the difference between the book you wrote and the book that was published?

The book shortens the content of my life with some adjustments to become a more inspirational story for readers and those who dream of becoming the best. I wasn’t the best, fastest or smartest kid, but that never worried me.

I always choose to play offensively because it will fix all problems. A coach once told me, “Attack until you win points.” You knock me down? I will continue to get up, over and over again.

My father always reminded me and taught me never to give up.

– Which artists, other than writers, have influenced your life?

One of my favorite artists is Yayoi Kusama. That Japanese woman really inspired me with her unconventional thinking and working style, her constant creativity, and that things sometimes don’t necessarily need an explanation.

I also like designer Sarah Burton of the Alexander McQueen brand. She loves challenges and always handles them wonderfully with a series of successive collections. I like her style: away from the spotlight but her creativity always shines through.
