World No. 1 Tennis Player Djokovic: ‘Lonely’ at the Pinnacle of Glory

At the end of 2023, world number one tennis player Djokovic continues to be at the top of glory. Ranked No. 1 in the world for 8 years, he holds many world records: 24 Grand Slams (2 more than Nadal and 4 more than Federer); 7 ATP Finals championships. Alone on top of the world, Djokovic still feels “lonely” because he is not loved like Federer and Nadal.

Young players like Holger Rune, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have achieved some quite remarkable achievements in 2023 but Djokovic is still the best performer of the season.

Nole has reached all four Grand Slam finals in 2023, of which he won three times. The Serbian warned his young competitors that his motivation will remain the same in 2024 and he will not start considering retirement until someone gives him a good reason.

Rune admitted that Djokovic is playing “unbelievable” tennis at the age of 36. Rune emphasized that young players like him have to start beating Nole more often before they can be said to be on par with their seniors. Serbs.

“I think it’s great to see Djokovic can still play at this level,” Rune said at the UTS event in London. It’s unbelievable what he’s doing. Alcaraz won a Grand Slam this year, Sinner finished the year in the top 4. I was at number 4 for the first time this year so I think the next generation will be very interesting.

We’re trying to compete with Djokovic to see if we can match him, but he’s still won three out of four Grand Slams so it’s quite difficult. So before we can say that, we need to start beating him more often.”

The “provocative” way of celebrating the audience makes Djokovic hated by many people.

Djokovic often faces a hostile atmosphere and is booed by the crowd during his matches. On the contrary, two players who also belong to the “Big 3” group, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, have never experienced the same thing.

Coach Patrick Mouratoglou said that Djokovic’s defeat of Federer and Nadal was one of the reasons why crowds around the world began to “hate” the Serbian tennis player.

“Federer and Nadal are the biggest superstars of tennis, but Djokovic came in and beat both of them,” Mouratoglou explained. The crowd hates him for that. I think Djokovic was booed for other reasons as well. Djokovic says he doesn’t like this negativity, but sometimes he pushes the crowd to boo because it helps him in matches. What we should not forget is that 14 million people follow Djokovic on Instagram, he is a great hero in Serbia. Djokovic is the biggest name in tennis. We will all miss Djokovic when he stops playing this sport.”

At the age of 36, Djokovic is quite used to competing in a hostile atmosphere. However, Nole still won the Grand Slam and other major tournaments. Just a few days ago, Djokovic explained how he overcomes the pressure when the whole stadium is against him.

The Serbian tennis player shared: “The pressure and tension will be much higher if the crowd is against you. But for most of my career, it was mostly a hostile atmosphere towards me. I learned how to thrive in that environment. And people think it would actually be better if they didn’t like me but that brings out the best in me in terms of tennis. It happened. But at the same time, I really enjoy playing in an environment where, you know, I get great support.”
